Teaching Composition Through the Ensemble

Created by our Artistic Director, Garrett Mendez, Teaching Composition Through The Ensemble(TCTE) is a guidebook designed to help students understand the music creation process earlier in their musical education by expanding the traditional band/orchestra method. Instead of solely focusing on learning to play an instrument, this approach incorporates Composition & Arranging concepts into ensemble lessons.

  • The Guidebook includes 12 tunes that have Lessons Plans, Building Block Charts, and Demo Band Arrangements.
  • In addition to developing sequential instrument technique like a regular band method book , TCTE also introduces composition concepts that align with instrumental technique development.
  • Scales, Chords, and Solfege/Scale Degrees connect to both instrument technique and fundamental compositional devices.
  • See Demo Version for Lesson Plan and Music examples.
  • The video below is an example of the Project Music students using the (TCTE) technique to learn March Militaire and then make their own original version.

Cost for the Complete Guidebook & Music: $300
All proceeds go to all of our music education projects.
