What is Collective Composition & Arranging?

It is a musical process that has widely existed in the African American vernacular, stemming from the ring shout in church, where all participants are active contributors to the musical creation process. This process has been the foundation of how popular music is created. Validating music as a vital foundation of community, it allows for all participants to express their ideas openly and values communication and collaboration.

Working in small ensembles, students will broaden their horizons by learning how to arrange music from popular music genres of rock, pop, jazz, funk, etc. Using aural music theory skills, students will transcribe a piece of their choice and then create their own arrangement.

Students will:
–Learn daily exercises that encourage creativity and musical exploration.
–Have Q&A sessions Guest Artists from around the country.
–Connect fundamental music blocks such as scales, intervals, and chord building to the creative process
–Compose an original piece of music

Open to: Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Guitar/Bass, Vocals
Suggested age/level: students should have at least one year of experience on their instrument.
